The New Haven Review was founded to be a venue for writers associated with the Greater New Haven area and to resuscitate the art of the book review. But mostly, we’re interested in publishing good writing, by which we mean writing we like and want to see more of in this world.
For the print edition, we like to see submissions from writers who can claim some connection to Greater New Haven, no matter how spurious. We also like to see book reviews that are better than the book reviews you usually see out there, for whatever reason. But that said, we also like to see essays, book reviews, fiction (of any genre), poetry, photojournalism, old receipts for dishwashers, grocery lists, and other ephemera that we think are really, really good and which the authors are willing to let us publish for no monetary remuneration (we’re working on that). Although we are extremely unlikely to publish your novel-length manuscript, there are no strict guidelines for length. So far, our shorter pieces tend to run to about 1,200 words; longer pieces run several thousand. Our print edition is sleek and handsome, but all of its content appears on this website in electronic form as well, for free, because that’s the way people do it in this day and age.
The New Haven Review website features weekly shorter reviews of unfairly neglected books and other, snappier pieces that we might come across and like. We will also use the website to trumpet news that is somehow relevant to us or our contributors. For the website, we don’t care where you live or if you have any connection to New Haven. We care only that you champion a neglected book for the scrutiny of all. Theoretically, takedowns—sorry, “fresh perspectives”—on established classics could be in the offing, provided that such pieces are thoughtful and well-reasoned and not simply bile in verbal form. Audio files? Videos? Yeah, sure. Why not?
Before submitting to either the print or web version of the New Haven Review, it is a very good idea to write to us first. You can do so at editor @ newhavenreview.com (remove the spaces). Tell us in a paragraph or two what you’re planning to send. We’ll write back, promise. If we don’t write back in what seems to be a reasonable amount of time, please write us again. We won’t hold it against you. If we all seem to get along, we can take it from there. Please believe us when we say that we don’t care about your credentials. If you are an established writer, then we’re grateful for your interest and your contribution. If you’re not, that is no strike against you whatsoever. We just care that the piece is really, really good. So write to us, one and all, and let us know what you have in mind. And thanks for visiting.
